In today’s fast-paced world, women have little time to pursue a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Their time is divided among family obligations, social commitments and fulfilling the expectations of others. They develop, organize and complete projects that are closely related to the wants, needs and desires of their children, spouses, community and friends. As a result they neglect their own personal needs and fail to develop and practice healthy physical and mental health. Participating in the role of mother, wife, girlfriend, sister, employee, employer, cook, babysitter, elder care taker, decorator, taxi driver, holiday hostess, referee, school volunteer, soccer-mom, accountant and cleaning woman are common everyday tasks.
These roles require commitment, hard work and sacrifice for an already over-burdened woman. Emotional exhaustion and time constraints are a woman’s reality. The expectations of others, and the pressure a woman puts on herself, may result in frustration, confusion and anger. The demand for endless energy and a commitment to ‘doing it all’ and ‘doing it now’, propels a women into the arena of ‘doing it perfectly’, an unfortunate reality for many of today’s women. Women often succeed in their efforts to fulfill everyone else’s wishes while neglecting their own well-being to the point of not being able to identify their own personal needs. I believe that one way women can address these needs is to talk to other women and share what their lives are like. Members choose to work to develop a balanced lifestyle and set realistic goals. Women need to begin to care for themselves NOW, not tomorrow and not ‘when things get calmer, quieter, financial problems improve, grandmother is better, or dad is less tired’.
When joining The Woman’s Support Group, a group offered by Counseling For Today’s Issues, you can begin self-care. By sharing daily problems and on-going struggles, as well as the positive things that happen, you will feel that others understand and are empathetic to what you are going through. You will explore personal feelings and share frustrations in a confidential and nurturing environment. You accept support and understanding from group members. You allot a ‘special time’ just for you. Congratulations!

Life’s journey should be rewarding and satisfying, not tedious and draining. Women should encourage others to recognize and respect ‘their personal time’ which is so essential and so very valuable to their growth and happiness. Life should not be burdensome, but a time of personal dignity, safety, mental and emotional health, honesty and prosperity. Learning ways to care for oneself takes an investment in time and energy which is very personal to each woman in the group.
You can make it happen for you. In The Woman’s Support Group you will learn to approach situations with compassion, humor and a can do attitude.
Call today to register for the group. You will be sent (not emailed) a registration form and you should fill it out and send it back to Counseling For Today’s Issues. To allow time for everyone to participate fully in group, no more than 8 individuals will be in the group at one time. Others will be on a waiting list.
The fee is $30. per person, for each 1½ hour group, once a week. Please call Sandra Farrell for more information at 508-873-2132. I am looking forward to meeting you and for you to meet other supportive and caring women.
